Pet Care - Planning Caring For Your Guinea Pig

Not everybody knows that a guinea pig is the most personable pet one can own. Even though they are classified as rodents, guinea pigs enjoy being touched and handled. They also enjoy companionship just like dogs do.

Before someone owns one of these lovable pets and something bad happens to them, here are few things to keep in mind to help take good care of your new guinea pig.

The first and probably most important thing is to make sure that their cage is large enough for them to be comfortable. Even though they are indoor animals, keeping them in a cage too small will prevent them from running around and exercising.

Stay away from cages with play wheels and little exercise balls. While these things look cool and fun for your pet, in all actuality they are very dangerous. This pet can get caught in them and which can contribute to ankle, back and even foot injuries. Be careful and stay from these types of toys.

Hay is a good thing to put inside their cage. They need hay to stay healthy, but it is important to have the right kind of hay for your pet.

Alfalfa hay is the most common variety found in most pet supply stores. However, alfalfa hay is ideal for pregnant guineas and their future babies. For the others, use a variety called Timothy hay.

Guinea pigs love to eat lots of things, so in terms of what to feed it, concentrate on variety. They prefer fruits and vegetables, but regular food from the store is fine too. Just make sure to give it a healthy and balanced diet high in healthy foods. The more variety the better, because it will help the guinea pig develop a healthy appetite and decent eating habits.

These are just some of the more important things to consider as a new guinea pig owner. Making sure to give them a big cage with no toys and a little hay, along with love and affection and a good diet, your guinea will have a healthy and happy life.
